Metabolic profiling new from HumanLab

HumanLab has introduced active and resting metabolic profiling, a system created to help gym members achieve their fitness goals by identifying their most effective training zones.

It can also create a new income stream for an operation, plus offering new marketing opportunities and the potential for improved membership retention.

Further income can be generated by including the assessments as part of a personal training package, weight loss programme or as part of a joining package.

Included is an exercise assessment which - if weight loss is the primary training goal - will accurately determine a person's fat burn heart rate. This is the point at which they burn the most body fat as an energy source.

Alternatively, exercisers whose training goals are more about fitness improvement or athletic performance need to work in a range of different training zones to achieve varying training adaptations and fitness improvements. The HumanLab assessment is claimed to help by indicating the most effective training zones for a particular individual.

The assessment also gives a person's VO2 score. This is an indication of their current fitness level and if their training programme is effective, this score should improve.

Also part of the package is a resting metabolic rate assessment which measures the rate at which an individual burns calories at rest.

By then adding in lifestyle calories: e.g. how active a person is at work; how their leisure time is spent; how much sport or exercise they do, etc, an accurate estimate of an individual's calorific requirement can be determined.

For anyone aiming at losing weight this is significant because a calorie deficit of between 500-1000 calories per day is required for effective fat loss.

The whole system comprises a VO2 Personal Assessment System, ExerSmart Software, a Dell D610 laptop computer, a Canon colour printer, training (four hours pre-course tutorial and 12 hours on site tuition), a marketing kit and promotional support, a heart rate transmitter belt, a mobile trolley, 48 assessment kits and a three-year warranty.
